The Copycat Checker
The proliferation of "copycat" extensions—where one publisher simply clones another publisher's code, slaps a new logo on it, and publishes it as their own—is an ongoing challenge in extension marketplaces. Our new Copycat Checker allows you to select any extension and instantly scan our vast database to see if anyone else has copied its core logic. The tool works by comparing the source code of your chosen extension against all other indexed extensions (focusing on .js and .json files). Identify unauthorized clones: Easily see a list of extensions from different publishers that share a significant amount of identical source files. Deep-dive comparisons: Click into the details to see exactly which files matched and view a side-by-side code comparison of your file and the matched file. Save time protecting your IP: Reclaim your intellectual property by quickly identifying the worst offenders before they siphon away your users. You can try out the new tool by navigating to Tools & Data > Copycat Checker in the main menu.
Find Similar Files
In addition to searching entire extensions, we've also upgraded our Advanced Source Code Search with a new Find Similar Files capability. If you are investigating a specific piece of malware, or simply want to track library usage across the ecosystem, you can now pinpoint a single source file and search for other files that are structurally or textually similar. Malware detection: Input a known malicious script and immediately find other extensions employing the same or slightly obfuscated variants of the code. Library tracking: Discover how widely a specific SDK or module is utilized across different extensions. The Find Similar Files tool is available right next to the Keyword Search under Tools & Data > Source Search.
